Imagine scrolling through Instagram and - before even getting the chance to wipe the morning stars out of your eyes - reading a shocking headline from 2013 about a man who bought two toy poodles that actually turned out to be giant rats. Ewwwwwww! The screenshot of a Daily Mail article also included a split shot of what the cute doggie is supposed to look like compared to what the poor guy ended up paying for.
Our skin's been crawling ever since. She couldn't wait until Throwback Thursday to hit us with this?!
Lena captioned the Instagram, "Not a day goes by that I don't think about this." Um, we can see why.
Because we like to torture ourselves, we pulled up the original story. Apparently, the scam went down at Argentina's largest bazaar, where the bargain hunter was tricked into buying two ferrets, or what the locals call "Brazilian rats," for $150 each. In the U.S., a toy poodle will run you upwards of $1,000.
According to the Daily Mail, the man was duped because the "ferrets had been given steroids at birth to increase their size and then had some extra grooming to make their coats resemble a fluffy toy poodle."
After taking the "pups" to the vet, he learned the awful truth. He wasn't alone though. Another woman fell for the con, except she thought she was getting a chihuahua. Not that this should make him feel better.
And, yes, we're well aware that ferrets aren't actually rodents. But ferrets, skunks, raccoons, rats...they're all the same to us, especially when you're talking cuddling an adorable pooch versus one of those critters.
